Zoar Methodist Church

Worship
Worship takes place every Sunday at 10.45am and 6.00pm. (4.00pm from Nov. - Feb) All are welcome. As well as our own ministers and preachers we welcome preachers from other churches so there is lots of variety. Worship includes both contemporary and traditional styles. Most importantly, we seek to glorify God and to worship him in spirit and in truth.

Prayer
We have two prayer meetings each week. Saturday mornings from 8am - 9am and Tuesday evenings from 7.15pm - 8.00pm. We welcome anyone to join us to pray for the needs of the world and the community. If you would like us to pray for something in particular please phone Steve on 01902 883331 or e mail - arnaljackson@aol.com

Oasis
Every Monday from 2.00pm - 4.00pm
If you're out and about in the village on a Monday afternoon you are welcome to call in for a drink and piece of cake. Oasis provides a meeting place for adults and children. Some small toys are available for children to play with.

Children
There are activities in place for children on a Sunday morning as well as during the week. During worship the whole church family meets together for the first part (about 20 minutes) then the children are invited to attend 'Junior Church' for age specific activities while the adults continue to meet together. We also have a creche for the younger ones. Parent/carers can choose whether to stay with their children or leave them in the capable hands of folks from the church. For your peace of mind all workers with children have been CRB checked.

Welcome
We are mindful that coming to a new church can be a big step. We would want you to feel as comfortable as possible and so we will make every effort to make you feel at ease. Please introduce yourself to the preacher or one of the stewards (they will be wearing a badge!) God bless.

Christian discipleship in the context of Climate Change

On February 1st during the morning service Rev Stephen Levett addressed the subject of climate change and considered the possible biblical basis for being concerned and taking action. He acknowledged it is a subject that some are still unconvinced about both from a scientific and a theological perspective, as well as something we sometimes feel overwhelmed by where we are unsure about exactly what a person might usefully do if they wished to respond. Here are a few places you might begin in order to carry reflection and action further:

Further reading and reflection:
Read Hope in God's Future: Christian Discipleship in the context of climate change. This significant report presented at the 2009 Methodist conference has been produced in booklet form for study throughout the wider church. Sign up for a copy on the sheet available at church. Price £5 Alternative you can download the report direct by visiting
http://www.methodist.org.uk/downloads/10-hope-in-gods-future-210509.pdf

Read the theological paper provided by Eco Congregations, which can be downloaded at http://ew.ecocongregation.org/resources/module3

Wanting to take action?
Sign up to the 10:10 campaign. This is a year long initiative in 2010 encouraging people and organisations to seek to cut their carbon emissions by 10% during the year. For more information and to sign up go to
http://www.1010uk.org/

Take other obvious steps such as:
-Try to apply the handy little saying in terms of your use of material things of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
-Use the council recycling bin as asked.
- Collect and place aluminium cans in the box at church.
- Do the energy audit your gas/electric supplier keeps inviting you to take.
- Share a lift to church or walk
etc.

Cans for Cash

Lake Street Methodist Church are collecting Aluminium drinks cans for recycling and we invite people to support our effort. Cans can be brought to the church whenever it is open and deposited in the special collecting boxes, or you can contact Steve Levett (tel:01384 252114 email: revlev@blueyonder.co.uk ) who will try to arrange alternative delivery or collection. Use these contact details also if you want any more information.

There are several good reasons to do this:
1. It's good for the planet. Recycling aluminium uses 95% less energy than it takes to mine and produce new aluminium. So it helps reduce the impact on climate change.
2. It's good for the neighbourhood. Picking up discarded cans contributes to cleaner streets and parks.
3. It's good for raising money! The average drinks can is worth about 0.5p in scrap for recycling. (Actually it's a bit more as it works out at about 35 pence per kilogramme and there are about 60 cans per kilo.) That might not seem much but if lots of people collect them and pool them for a cause, the amount can build up. For now Lake Street is aiming at raising £500 to contribute to the costs of a building scheme which includes the provision of disabled access and toilet facilities.

P.S You can tell a can is aluminium rather than other metals by testing it with a magnet. Aluminium is NOT magnetic whilst most other metals are.

P.S 2: We are not collecting aluminium foil or other items containing aluminium at this time, only cans.
