Lake Street Methodist Church are collecting Aluminium drinks cans for recycling and we invite people to support our effort. Cans can be brought to the church whenever it is open and deposited in the special collecting boxes, or you can contact Steve Levett (tel:01384 252114 email: revlev@blueyonder.co.uk ) who will try to arrange alternative delivery or collection. Use these contact details also if you want any more information.
There are several good reasons to do this:
1. It's good for the planet. Recycling aluminium uses 95% less energy than it takes to mine and produce new aluminium. So it helps reduce the impact on climate change.
2. It's good for the neighbourhood. Picking up discarded cans contributes to cleaner streets and parks.
3. It's good for raising money! The average drinks can is worth about 0.5p in scrap for recycling. (Actually it's a bit more as it works out at about 35 pence per kilogramme and there are about 60 cans per kilo.) That might not seem much but if lots of people collect them and pool them for a cause, the amount can build up. For now Lake Street is aiming at raising £500 to contribute to the costs of a building scheme which includes the provision of disabled access and toilet facilities.
P.S You can tell a can is aluminium rather than other metals by testing it with a magnet. Aluminium is NOT magnetic whilst most other metals are.
P.S 2: We are not collecting aluminium foil or other items containing aluminium at this time, only cans.
